So, What Are These Great Features?
OK, here's list of great things that Translator does that can benefit you. Most of these things you don't even have to worry about, but just to note...:

The Easy Obvious Stuff

  • Supports Akai, Roland, Emu, Kurzweil, Ensoniq, EXS, Giga, HALion, SampleCell, SampleTank, Reality, Reaktor, WAV/AIFF/SND/KSF/S, Pulsar, MESA, Triton, XV-5080, ASR-X, SoundFont, others
  • Supports 8-bit, 12-bit, 13-bit, 16-bit, 24-bit, and 32-bit files
  • Sample Auditioning
  • Reads and writes ALL popular audio sample formats
  • Fast, Efficient Operation
  • Detailed Status Dialogs with Pausable Translation feature

The Hard Stuff

Reads and Translates Ensoniq and Kurzweil Programs
Translator was the first to read Kurzweil CD's, and the only one to take those files and translate them into popular formats like Giga, EXS, HALion, and others. Chicken System's intricate knowledge of the Ensoniq format enables spot-on translations, and long experience with Kurzweil's format makes any Kurzweil file open season for any sampler user. Translator knows these formats!

Reads and Translates Bulk DOS Disks
Only Translator can with one simple operation convert an entire CD or drive of certain file(s0 into another format(s). Got a S-5000 CD? Do it all at once with Translator.

Intelligent Automatic Stereo Combining and Splitting
Certain formats are "dual-mono," meaning they use two samples with separate parameters (loop points, root key, etc.) to simulate stereo. Most of the time they have the same parameters. Sometimes they don't. When converting to a stereo format, Translator can either combine the eligible qualified samples, force stereo files based on one side's parameters, not combine at all, or even prompt you every time (although you probably don't need to.) All this is done automatically, based on your choice.

Giga Power

  • Translator is the ONLY program that writes real, authentic, exact .gig files, ones designed to be read into Giga without any rewriting etc. within the editor. Translator write regular files, not irregular ones as other programs do
  • Translator writes exact v2.0 files, while others write only version 1
  • Translator can write not only .gig files, but Giga Performances as well. This enables mimicking of Akai Multis and Roland Performances
  • Translator compensates for Giga's restriction on mon-OR-stereo Regions by intelligently combining or splitting, also can pre-determine mono or stereo as the above
  • Compensates for non-exponential Layers/Dimensions accurately
  • Writes condensed .gig files and does not include residual information
  • Writes Instruments into single .gig files whenever possible, instead of splitting them, does not write unnecessary folders
  • "Bulk Convert" Roland option virtually eliminates replicated samples from Roland CD's or disks
  • Respects Giga's 128 Instrument limit and writes a minimum of multiple .gig files if necessary without sample replication (common issue with SoundFont->Giga translations)
  • Extracts Instruments into Groups or individually, extracts samples and imports them as well.

Supports Emu "Links"
A frequent Emu programming technique is to link several Presets together in a Bank, to make a composite "SuperPreset." Again, Translator is the ONLY program that supports reading these accurately.

Supports Roland Performances Easily
Roland Performances are combinations of Patches. They are NOT simply collections of Patches, but the Performance contains override information and layering information that essentially combine Patches and/or alter several critical parameters. Only Translator automatically, without any additional work, combines these into a single structure that mimics EXACTLY how the Roland's play them, MIDI Channels and all. Translator has provided this to Giga users for years.

View Roland Disks In An More Natural Way
Other programs view Roland disks basically as a hierarchy. They aren't! Patches don't have to be in Performances, Patches or Performances don't have to be in Volumes, and so on. Translator accurately views Roland disks so you can accurately see what's on the disk, rather than referring to "Orphans" or other non-Rolandish jargon.

Write To Proprietary Disks
Other competing programs just extract from CD's and drives. Translator gives you access both ways, and has done so for the last 3 years.

Supports Translating From Akai S-5000 Multi Files
Quite a few complex S-5000 setups rely on Multis for their setups. Translator reads these and translates them, combining them if needed depending on the MIDI Channels - so they sound just like they did on the Akai!

Use SMDI To Transfer Batches of Samples To and From Hardware Samplers
SMDI is a SCSI transfer protocol between computers and samplers. It is used primarily to exchange samples. With Translator, you can drag an Emu Bank, a Kurzweil .krz file, whatever, and extract the samples and send them directly to your SMDI-enabled sampler!

View And Extract Mac Drives on the PC
If you have Giga, or Reason, or other, and want to translate SampleCell stuff, you can do this with Translator since it reads Mac disks. It also extracts EXS-24 files, or any audio format such as WAVE, AIFF, or SoundDesigner. And - you can play back samples from it too.
